Au pair? What does that mean?

The term “au pair” is French for mutuality. A year as an au pair, however, can mean a lot more for you. And although an au pair stay is supposed to be to the mutual benefit of you and your host family, it is clearly you who benefits the most from it.

That is not to say, however, that the host family doesn’t profit from taking you in. For example, they directly and personally take part in your development, get a glance at what their children might be like when they start growing up and learn what it’s like to deal with a late teenager.

Do you want to be an au pair?

An au pair stay is a merged work and travel experience. As an au pair, you stay with a host family for one year, living, eating and sleeping in the family’s home. Accommodation and meals are provided at no cost for you. In return, you are responsible for the family’s children, from hands-on care and baby-sitting to picking them up from school and playing with them. You will also help in other aspects of the household where appropriate.

As an au pair, you will receive weekly pocket money. You will have enough time off to discover your town and host country and to take a part-time language course, such as an evening course.
